Myth 1: Any cyber cafe offering fingerprinting is good enough.

Fact: Embassies, the FBI, and background check authorities only accept prints from specifically authorised centers. You won't get a refund, and you'll have to start over. 

Myth 2: Live scan and ink fingerprinting are the same thing.

Fact: They are two different methods of capturing fingerprints. In ink fingerprinting, your fingers are rolled in ink and pressed onto a physical fingerprint card. With livescan, you place your fingers on a digital scanner that captures high-resolution images electronically- no ink involved.

Both methods can produce fingerprints for purposes such as an FBI background check or an RCMP Criminal Record Check. However, there is an important distinction:

For RCMP submissions from outside Canada: Livescan and digital fingerprint capture are only permitted from within Canada at RCMP-accredited locations. Applicants in India must use ink fingerprinting on the official C-216C form, which is then mailed to an RCMP-accredited company in Canada for digitization and submission to RCMP CCRTIS.

For FBI submissions from outside the US: Similarly, applicants in India use ink fingerprinting on official FD-258/FD-1164 cards, which are mailed to a US office for processing and submission to the FBI. Electronic livescan submission to the FBI is handled through US-based channels.

Myth 3: Getting fingerprinted once covers all purposes.

Fact: There is no universal fingerprint submission. Each authority has its own format, its own certified channel, and its own retention policy. If you have multiple purposes - say, a job abroad and a visa application - you'll likely need separate submissions for each.

Myth 4: If your fingerprints get rejected, you have to restart your entire visa application.

Fact: In most cases, only the fingerprint submission needs to be redone, not the full application. However, this still adds additional time to your timeline, and some countries have strict validity windows. So, the real cost of a rejection is the delay it causes when you're already mid-process. 

Myth 6: Your Aadhaar biometric data can be used for visa or FBI purposes.

Fact: Aadhaar biometrics are collected and stored by UIDAI in a format designed for India's internal identity system. They are not transferable to embassy or foreign government systems, and no external authority accepts Aadhaar biometric data as a substitute for their own fingerprinting process. The format, the certification chain, and the legal basis are entirely different. 

• You have to get your fingerprints done on the correct card - like FD-258 and FD-1164 for the FBI and C-216C Form for RCMP criminal records check.
• Make sure the technicians roll your finger completely from one side of the nail to the other. If they only captured the pad of the finger, it may be rejected by authorities like the FBI or RCMP.
• In the rush of a busy Delhi lab, it’s easy for a technician to put your right hand in the left hand’s box. Stop and verify every single box before they move to the next finger.
• Wash your hands with plain soap and cool water. Avoid hand sanitizers or oily lotions on the morning of your appointment, as they create a film that can cause slippery hands or extra smudges.
• Having Mehendi or even fading henna can interfere with the fingerprinting process. Make sure your fingertips are 100% clear of any dye.
• If your hands are sweaty, the ink will smudge. Ask the technician for a moment to cool your hands under a fan or hold a cold water bottle before your turn.
• If you accidentally touched the card with an inky thumb while moving it, it’s better to start over. Any stray ink in the margins can cause errors.
